When to use a CO2 setup?

Hi,

Humbly, I would suggest to the OP that he first start with the end in mind. In other words, what type of aquarium are you looking for. Be mindful that an Amano type aquascape takes a lot of work and maintenance. Do you have the time and desire to trim your tank every few days and keep up with the water changes? Or, do you want a more hands off type of set up. Decide on this first and then work backwards to select your plants, hardscape, lights, and fertilization regimen.

CO2 is something that will benefits plants because carbon is critical for plant growth and well-being. All aquariums have carbon in them but it's availability to plants is limited or in short supply. Depending on what you decide above, you may want to supplement with CO2. Perhaps, a liquid carbon solution is all you need such as Seachem's. However, if you do want to keep some of the faster growing plants, you'll need to supplement with either DIY or pressurized CO2.

The setup doesn't have to be complicated and there are many DIY options. Do you research and you'll do fine.

Best of luck!
