i am cycling my tank.... now i have seen ammonia.... and nitrite...and a small amount of nitrates....and now everything is testing at zero.....from what i have read, shouldn't there be some nitrates if everything is cycling properly???

Are the plants looking happy? They love to use up nitrogen. It usually takes a few weeks for them to get established. Then they start growing and burning up ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates fast. Add in ammonia up to .50 and see how long it takes for it to disappear. If it only takes a day or two you can safely start adding in fish.

i have my pleco in the tank right now along with 3 zebra danios.... the plants seem to be happy... everything is nice and green... and will occasionally see some "pearling"... i have also the roots on the java fern has grown quite a bit (at least an inch already... only been in there for a week)...

heavily planted ? probably the plants are taking it out, presuming your kit is in date and you are doing the test correctly.

its not very heavily planted (1 java fern, 2 bunches of money wart, 4 mondo grass (i think thats the name) and something that eventually turns red).... and the kit is in date and i am pretty sure im am doing the tests right.... not very hard to read the card and i have gotten reading before.....

testing at 0 for ammonia and nitrites right now ?

and nitrates also ?

can you give a little bit more precise history on the tank cycling (what your ammonia & nitrites & nitrates peaked at, how long until you saw nitrates, when you did the last water change and how much changed)?
