i called all the hardware stores and home depot around my area and asked if they had silica sand, it seems they've never heard of it before. They usually tell me they only have all purpose sand or play sand. WHERE CAN I BUY silica sand?

yes the sand blasting sand is silica... my hubby has used it many times in the sandblasting macheinery to repaint.. you will have to find a non chain store, to get it use yellow pages and look under sand blasting supplies, or just ask around and then you can find it, they use this because real sand is way to hard and pits the metal along with the old paint so they have just went to silica...
pool filter sand is also siilica sand and it is around 7.00 a 50 lb bag you can get it at local pool store..
I don't think silica sand is ever advertised as "silica sand" in America. I've only seen it labeled as such in some old British aquarium books.
