Hello, I am looking to buy two pieces of slate. I need them because my angelfish need something to breed on. Anyone have any ideas of where I can get some. I was thinking maybe a local hardware store???

check with local plant nursery and landscape companies they all have rocks etc.

My LFS carry it.It's actually pretty cheap there too.

Home Depot or a landscaping store is probably your best bet. I know it's ridiculously overpriced at my local fish store. $5 a pound compared to about $9 a slab at Home Depot.

Concur. Best deals are at rock, masonry, and landscaping supply places. We have a place up here that sells slate exclusively and they have a $1-$4 box of mismatched broken slates from 4ft to 5 inches. Do a search on the net for your local area then call and ask.

You guys can both check the local custom kitchen or custom counter businesses. They have lots of smallish chunks as waste and will (sometimes) give smaller chunks of slate, granite, etc away free.

im looking for granite pieces.....do you guys know if those places carry granite too?

They might but the best place to check for that would be a custom counter top place. Most will sell their unusable waste for cheap or even give it away if your lucky.
