Where Did They Go?

I picked-up 4 Amano Shrimp yesterday and put them into my Q-Tank. This morning I checked and for the life of me I can only find 2 of them.

It's a 10 gallon Q-Tank; is fully cycled and void of any decor. It has a glass canopy with cut-outs for the filter, heater, etc. There is maybe 1/2" gap between the canopy and the equipment. You'd think I'd be able to see them if they're in there.

Amanos can get out--they jump very quickly when startled and 1/2 inch ample room for them to get by. I'd check for little crispies around the tank. Also, inside the filter, inside any decor, etc--but carefully. If they are hiding inside decorations, they may have molted and are waiting for their shell to harden--they are very vulnerable at this stage.

Thanks. I checked the floor -- even swept it. Couldn't make out anything but dirt. I looked into the filter with a flashlight and didn't see anything (but honestly, I wasn't able to see much without disassembling it). My guess would be that they escaped and I have yet to locate the remains.

I have noticed while watching them, that they are very agile. Would they be able to climb the tank wall? Or is just a matter of them leaping out?

They can swim, especially along the edge of the tank. They can also make a sudden 'jump', pushing off a wall and out of the water. Very agile, indeed!

Just checked again and another one has turned up AWOL. Still no remains. I'm wondering if its possible they're going into the filter to molt. Reasonable or grasping at straws?

One of my amanos did crawl into the outflow nozzle of my bio wheel filter. It certainly could have made it into the bio wheel compartment. Maybe you should take your filter apart and look.

Update

Checked this morning and still down to 1 remaining of the 4. I turned off the filter and all the lights in the room. I checked back in a few minutes and lo and behold, there are 3. My guess would be they're hiding in the filter or the filter intake tube.

Note: I have noticed that they are able to climb on the sealant joint in the corners where 2 pieces of the glass tank meet. I have seen them climb out of the water like this leaving only their tails submerged.
