For me it was a toss up between 3 of them, cause i do go to a local fish store, on line and through special dealers. For many of the fish I have are not sold at pet shops and are extremely rare. I own many natives and odd live bearers that the average reader here has never seen. So i rarely find this little gems either on line or at the pet store and never ever at the big stores. They tend to go with what sells, and what is easy to get hold of.
None of the fish that I have are sold at local pet stores, and some of them have never been imported aside from the shipment that mine came in (and most of them are in the $75-$800 range, so it would be impractical for a lfs to sell them). So, online.
As a general rule all of my livestock comes from one LFS. I have bought a few fish at other placesincluding alternate LFS's and Petsmart. I have also bought some unnecessary problems from those places. I like to see what I am buying so I generrally shy away from on-line retailers, but would use them if the need arose.

I buy from a LFS. Walmart and other chain stores generally do not have as many fish and they are usually in miserable condition. I never bought fish online before, but I might in the future. I get my supplies from the LFS, Walmart (their prices are great), and sometimes online.
I bought my fish from my LFS and Petsmart and I get my fish supplies from Wal-Mart, LFS, Petsmart, Petco, and online.
Hardly ever from the LFS, extremely poor quality fish if you ask me. Most of my fish come from local breeders, shipped to me from other breeders, or importers. I ever just call those guys or order online.
i usually go to my lfs but sometimes i will feel bad and buy some fish from walmart just to save those poor animals, but on the other hand buying fish form a cruel place like that supports there fish profits which keep them selling more fish, hmmm i feel bad now.
