Are the welding Co2 tanks acceptable to use? Or do you have to use something different? And, can you get the tank filled at a welding shop?

Check around for bottled gas suppliers. You might also look around for home brew stores.

If you've got a home brew supply store around, I know they'll have CO2. I have a 20 pound tank that I use to carbonate beer with. I don't use it on my tank, but I know where to get them if I needed something for the tank. The brew house typically has 5 pound, 10 pound, and sometimes 20 pound tanks. They should also have lines and regulators. I don't know if you need the same type of set-up for a fish tank. But, all the supplies can be found there.

CO2 is much better when used for beer purposes. :thm:

Ditto on the home brewing shops! Hope I don't go out on a limb here....but CO2 is CO2. Most welding supply stores will have the highest grade (minimum level of contaminates) available. I get mine filled there for keeping head pressure on the kegs during third stage fermentation.

A welding shop won't sell gas. A welding supply store, a home brew shop, or a welding/medical gas supplier will have CO2.

I've worked in the welding industry off/on for 15 years. I wouldn't 100% trust the used tanks that you exchange at the welding supply stores. Last year, I got a Pure Argon tank that was contaminated with another gas (Nitrogen). I'd say the odds of getting a contaminated tank is about 1 in 1,000. (I'd probably go through about 50 Argon tanks a year and have had this problem only once in 15 years). Those are pretty good odds that you won't ever have a problem if your just getting CO2 for home use.

That being said, I still bought a new 20# tank at Aquariumplants.com and get it filled with CO2 onsite under my supervision at a local welding/medical gas supplier. The fishkeeper in me doesn't want to deal with those nasty used tanks at the welding supply stores.
