Where do you keep your temp?

I was keeping mine around 74F and this past week, my tang got sick (velvet I think) and I cranked it up closer to 80. Well, everyone has been a little more active since the temp has been higher, so I didn't know if they were chilly before or if they're too hot now... let me know what you do. Thanks!

We keep ours at 77 - 80F. When it gets up to 85F+ is when problems can start to occur with invertebrates.

Have you ever checked your temp probe to see how accurately it measures? The easiest way to check is by putting it in a glass of crushed ice with just enough water to remove the air from between the ice. It should read really close to 32F. Some people claim that's not a good measure of accuracy when we're trying to monitor temps closer to 80F, but it is the simplest and will at least give you a ballpark idea. It's also the same method used by many food retailers that check temps of prepared foods. If you're ambitous or just really curious, you can repeat the test multiple times (letting the temp probe warm back up between tests) and get an idea of the probe's precision as well as the estimate of its accuracy.

I test the two temp probes on our reef tank once every 4 - 6 months just to be sure nothing's changed. They are electronic, so there is always that chance that something can go wrong with them. One of them commonly reads about 2F too low and the other about 2F too high.

74 is very low for a marine tank, even 77 is getting low. i keep mine pretty high at about 82, but that is because i am trying to get my clowns to breed (STILL!!!!:mad2: )lol

ha ha ha ha...fishieness...take it you still not had any joy there yet then?

Niko

i just get annoyed when i explain everything i do in my reef by trying to get my clowns to breed

I tried for a long time to keep my tank stable at 78 but it had a mind of its own and wanted to be at 80. So now the tank stays cosistently at 80.

LOL!! Its the exact same thing for me ... ever since I've set it up, I've tried to keep it around 78 but for some strange reason it seems to gravitate towards staying a constant 80! Everything looks good, the fish are swimming around just fine, so I figured I'd just leave it be :)

Cheers!
