I was given (yes, given) a 12 gallon nano cube by a friend who just took it down and went freshwater.
I've never had a saltwater tank before, nor do I know very much about it, so attempting to set this thing up has proved slightly difficult.
Does anybody know what this is and where it might go? Am I missing something? 001.png

That looks like the ballast for the lights.

You should have cords coming off of the hood that will mate up to the round connectors on the ballast. after making the connection turn on the lights and make sure the cooling fan comes on when the daylights are on.

Congratulations on the gift and welcome to salt. My first salt was a 12 gal aquapod.

plus 1 to that, its a ballast. i would recommend keeping them a few feet away from the tank itself. I have an 8 gallon biocube and i tried to keep the ballasts right behind it on my desk and had heat issues (they get hot)

Thanks everyone! I've hooked them up (seemingly correctly), but I think they've blown out - a loud humming noise, a flickering of lights, and then the wondrous smell of burnt electricals.
