Where is Mike Rowe when you need him?

Oh what a mess to clean.. but wow, it's so worth it. Congrats on getting such a great tank setup.

I had a question, the Fluvals, or any canister in general. I read that it's bad to have "loops" on the hoses for canisters, and never understood why. I saw that your canisters has these "loops" that dip down, before it goes up. Do you notice any problems while operating?

We don't want canister tubes to loop down like that because muck is going to collect inside at the bottom of those loops. That will restrict the diameter of the passage at those points which limits how much water gets through them into the pump and back into the tank. It also lengthens the upward distance the motor has to push return water before it reaches the top. So that also slows down the flow rate.

Oh, I thought it was done on purpose

I wanted to do that to my hoses, because I didn't want to cut it too short, in case I want to move it in the future. I read that it's not good to do that, so I just left the extra hose inside the tank for now.

Regards to the extra length restricting flow: Since the canister is a closed system, would this matter? For every gallon of water that the canister pumps up, the same amount also get's pushed down, so canister filter's don't exactly "pump" water, but rather "push" water. If it was sump, the shorter the hose, the more flow. I'm not so sure how much longer hoses affect canisters.

I applogize for the hijack ahead of time! That's still a great looking tank though, waiting for more pics with fish!

Wow, that's disgusting (before pix). My hat's off to you - I would've taken one look at all the muck and run away.

:thm::thm:You did an excellent job on that tank. A lot of people would not have attempted such a job. It looks amazing!
I could just smack myself!! It took me a few minutes to figure out who Mike Rowe is!!lol (that's one of my hubby's favorite shows)
