Where is my cycle?

:OT: at bit.

When you folks say "dose with ammonia" what exactly are you referring to?

I've always used an ammonia source (food, feeders) to start the cycle but I've never "dosed" or "re-dosed" with ammonia or heard of anyone doing it (granted I don't get out much)?

1/2 the point of it is so that you can fully stock right away, so go ahead and stock.

when they say ammonia, they mean store bought, 100% ammonia with no surfactants or scents or anything else in it. just ammonia.

Wow. Thanks. I've been keeping all sorts of animals in all sorts of tanks.....somehow that one got completely past me. :huh: I've killed a lot of feeders for nothing.
Man.... I've been on all sorts of fish, caudate, invert, and turtle forums and have never heard of that. :shakehead: I'm 52 years old and have been keeping salt and freshwater tanks since I was a kid. Scary.
Really.... how clueless can I get? :jaw:
 
I call it plain ammonia instead of 100% because the bottled ammonia we can buy is usually going to be around a 10% solution of ammonia hydroxide. You can find plain ammonia in some grocery stores but mom and pop hardware stores are more likely to carry it nowadays. All the stuff I see in the grocery stores is the sudsy or lemon/citrus flavored crap... which is NOT the right stuff to use.

Ace Hardware stores carry their own private label plain ammonia. Here's their website for their product. They only sell it by the case online but the stores have individual bottles. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1307957

And if you can't find ammonia, have yourself a cold beer and add ammonia the natural way... pee in the tank. LOL

Oh and another update:

I think my cycle is VERY close to being complete..

My ammonia is being broken down very quickly (under 24 hours) and yesterday my nitrites were off the scale and today they were like 0.25 or 0.50 ppm as far as I could tell...
