Anyone know where to find dwarf livebearers? I am in the Boston, Ma. area. I am kind of skechy about buying online, but may give it a try. Just looking for a few males for my 5 gal.

Thanks in advance
Chris

i don't know if there are specifically "dwarf" livebearers, but guppies and endlers would fit well into a 5 gal. They only get to about 1.5 inches with the tail, especially the males (females get larger/longer).

oh, sorry, didn't know "dwarf livebearer" referred to an actual species. i've always referred to those as "mosquitofish". I guess that's why scientific names sometimes are better than common names.

good luck finding them!

If you are looking for heterandria formosa you can find them online at Sachs Systems Aquaculture. Go to products, fresh water vertebrates, and look for them there. You can also find them for sale on aquabid.

here's a crazy thought. many local Vector Control places will give away mosquitofish to eat mosquito larvae in standing bodies of water. don't know if they're the same species, and they probly won't have the pretty colors, tho.

That is where I get mine. They do good business and I am planning on getting more from him this fall.

Here is my standard post on these guy..
There is only one fish that can fit in a small tank very well, the least killie/dwarf live bearer, Heterandria formosa, aka the least killie or dwarf live bearer. These guys are hard to come by, these are usually a special order from your pet shop but they are great fish.
The males reach about 1/4 of an inch long at full adult hood and the females are larger at an inch. They are very peaceful fish and thrive in tiny tanks. I own a small colony right now in my 5 gallon. I plan on getting more soon for an outdoor container. But they do well having plants like hornwort floating on the top of the tank and they eat crushed fish flakes.

Best filter to use on these guys, either Undergravel or Sponge.

If you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

Chris, I found these guys to be slow breeders and you can actually have up to 30 in a planted 5 gallon. You will need to be very careful on the type of filtration used in this tank. Most HOB will suck them up so you will need to place a sponge on the intake, or use a sponge or under gravel filter on the tank.
