Where to get driftwood and black sand from?

I really have no preference in driftwood. I just want a huge piece and was wondering if there was anywhere else people bought it other than LFS's.

Take a look at this eBay link. They usually have some great pieces of mopani and Malaysian driftwood for sale, both of which sink right away.

I got my wood from here, I was not disappointed!! it sunk right away and it did not discolor my tank. and the ex large was awsome!! and cheap 12.99 regularly 21.99 I was an am very pleased! http://store.seacorals.net/feexlamadrbr.html

I want to say I also bought mopani and it took me 2 weeks to stop the tanins from leaching big time. and I was not happy with the shape when it arrived.

awesome, thanks for the info. If you say the mopani leaches I'll trust you. I expected any wood I got to leach but if I can get wood thats not going to leach for the same price I might as well, thanks again.

Oii check the 3m site, it'll give you local retailers for whatever product you're looking for ;)

awesome, I sent their customer service a email.. I guess I should have just looked better lol.

do you have a picture of the XLG piece you got from them? I'm going to be keeping it in 6'x18"x18" tank with large cichlids. The example picture they have is this

which is alright but I'd rather have something thicker that takes up more space. I was also wondering how much shipping cost you.

This is about the ideal piece I am looking for that I found on the ebay link that guy posted.

it just gets pricy after the shipping.

if you live in hawaii or know anyone that does, the big island (i think) has a black sand beach. get a shovel and a couple of buckets and your good to go. pay someone in hawaii to ship it to you because it could be cheaper. you should rinse it really well since it does come from a salt water bay. would this work?

I've got a piece of mopani in my 10g, and I think the 2 weeks is about right - that's about what happened to me. After letting it sit for a while, I did 2 50% water changes in 2 days, and it's stayed clear since. Aside from the tanins coloring my water for a couple weeks (it took about that long for it to get bad enough for me to care, and it still wasn't a big deal to me to change the water, but my 50% is a tenth the size of yours, haha), I really like the stuff.
I got mine from our local Petco. I've seen some pretty large pieces (1.5-2 ft), but this store seems to carry more small ones (7"-12") than large ones. If you go on the right day, they've got a lot of different shapes. I got lucky and found perfect pieces both times I went to get some. I've got a new piece soaking right now. They're around $6 a piece.
Good luck finding the wood and the sand!

I'm starting to hate my local petsmart more and more, I know they sell it but its not cheap.. They give me a lot of attitude about price matches lately. Maybe I'll just do the old switcheroo by taking a label off of a small piece and stick it on a big piece.. They're employees are so stupid they'll never know.
