Where would I put the pump?

If I made this filter, where would I put the pump? On the inside of the bucket? On the outside of the bucket? At where the water is coming in? Or where it leaves the filter to go back to the tank?

And what kind of pump would I need? Something non-submersible? All I'm seeing in aquarium pumps are huge horse power pumps or submersible powerheads.

How big is the container? You could get like a marineland 1140 or a maxi jet 1200 and put it on a return, below the grill, instead of the cut out pipes that hold it in place, instead of them cut a few plastic pieces and silicone them inside the container to hold the grill up.

I always prefer an external pump if it's practical. A Blueline 20 isn't too steep, flows 480 gph @ 0' and is whisper quiet. A MaxiJet 1200 would be a lower cost option, but the flow won't be as much, 295gph @0'.
