It's up to you. How large will your RO water tank be with the set-up? You don't really need 2 separate containers for top-offs and water changes but you can do it that way if you prefer.

I only use one, and I use a Python for cleaning.. I also only change water out of my sump, never from my tank directly. Thats why when I was looking I was either going to buy a sump, or what I ended up doing was buying a complete system that had a sump. Also I don't drain from the Refugium, only from my return and skimmer areas. My sump is large enough that I could do up to a 15% change if needed. If I have to go larger then that, then I would need to drain from the main tank.
However in the past when I have cleaned out directly from the tank, the fish seem to get so uptight over the whole process.. So I really try not to. As of now they don't get overly worked up.. IME

I think I want one of these... can you somehow use the RO or salt mixed water for the cleaning? Does it work with sand or just gravel? Either way, I got my first mouthful of tank water this past weekend (I know it can be avoided, but ... I learn better by doing... :wall: ) so this looks great.
I just have an extra maxjet that I use for mixing saltwater. When I am done with the mixing and need to start transfering, I reverse my python, take off the big suction part, hook it to the maxjet and use it as a pump to put the water into my sump. Works like a charm and NO sucking..
Great tips :headbang2: ... I probably would not have thought of that. I saw a python at walmart today... I'm several states away from home, but I plan to get one when I get back.
I also bought a R/O-DI system on e-bay Aqua-Safe Aquarium ll.It is a 6 stage 110 gpd with 2-DI canisters $75 delivered,($49.99 plus $25 s/h/i).Float valve was $16.50 more.E-bay seller ID is "aquasafesystems"

check out the link in my sig, they make some good 6 stage units for a darn good price IMO.
I didnt read the entire thread, but I thought id chime in with my suggestion... i think tis a good unit, I own one, and it only cost me $140 CAD shipped.
just noticed above, people who own the same unit.
I didnt buy the II model, I have the original, and I prefer its single DI chamber (larger in size) than the 2 smaller ones offered on their newer models.
However, model II is cheaper than I paid for mine.
but they are excellent systems, and come with all kinds of stuff NOT included but NEEDED anyway, by other brands.

I thought about getting this one.. What made up my mind, with the other I can immediately tell when the DI resin is spent because I can see into the container because it is clear.
But if you are looking for economical, I agree with you this one is the way to go.
