Hey Now All,

I want to start a cichlid tank. I have read that convicts are a good starter cichlid. Will a 29 gallon be ok for a male and female convict pair?

Any other cichlids great for 29 gallon that are good to start with?

Thanks!

take care,
Jared

if you get convicts remember male convict+femalconvict+water=lots of babies so make sure you have a way to get rid of a lot of fry:D

A pair should be fine in a 29... I think they might get pretty territorial and kill each other if you have more than a pair though.

there are other species that would do ok or even well in that size of a tank.

Kribs,
Flag Cichlid(Laetacara curviceps),
if you have water towards soft apistogramas,
Golden Dwarf Acara(Nannacara anomala),
Rams,

if you have hard water or buffer it with coral in the tank,

there are several species of shell dwellers that would work
my wife has multifasciatus in a ten gallon,
Fairy Cichlid(Neolamprologus brichardi)

I have only small tanks like yours so I know the list of cichlids that would work in a small tank;)

I know the tank I am getting is larger "building stand" I was thinking shell dwelling for a 55 the lfs's here do not have any and seem to not be interested in ordering something they have not got expierences with. I live in western part of NC, was wondering good sources to pick some up if anyone has ideas other than mail order. I was also wondering the number of fish like the shell dwellers or kribs I can safely stock and plan on trying to breed? will have 10 gallon grow out tank.

:) I love those fish oh so very much :)
It's so interesting how they have extended family units!!

I only have one male...and he is the most elegant fish in the tank (I think he knows that too, haha).

I have a pair of Jewels (hemichromis guttatus) in a 29 and they're doing great. KYle
