Hi All, i'm a newbie so go easy.

I'm new to fish keeping and was wanting to buy an external filter for my Juwel Rio 300L tank.
Which would you recommend: Fluval 405 or Eheim Pro3 2073?
I really don't know which is better, quieter, most ecconomical etc etc... and best place to buy from (i live in N. Ireland) mail order prob.. so any help would be great.

Cheers

I love my fluval 405, but others say they have issues. I've heard of people having issues with the eheims, too. What size is the tank? Does the 300 mean 300 liter?

Cool... Just wanted to make sure you were looking at appropriately sized filters... Not sure about the eheim as I've never used one, or done much research about them. From my personal experience, the fluval 405 is a very good filter. It has never had problems. No leaks (expect on initial set up - I forgot to install the o-ring!), the 'water stop valve' works well. Occasionally, you will get a couple drops from it after you disconnect it. It is easy to set up, and easy to do maintenance on. Fluval parts are easy to come by (I have run the filter for over a year, and not needed parts - besides media). It has always primed easily for me. As long as you follow the instructions, you should never have to prime it. When I have because I've completely removed hoses or something like that, it has primed easily. You need to be careful to line up the matchmarks when you install the lid, otherwise it won't go on. I believe that is the case with any canister. Fluval has really easy to follow matchmarks. In the cabinet, I hardly hear it. Sometimes, I'll double check that it is running.... It has really thorough instructions for setup. I forgot the o-ring, because I didn't follow them. Do you have any questions about the 405?

I was considering buying a Fluval 405 but after reading allot of reviews I found too many of the same complaints. Recommend before you buy any designer canister filter you research customer reviews starting with the worst to best as anyone with a new toy will give a great review, its the problems that you want to know about.
The only Canister I can recommend mostly because of there longevity lasting 5-10 years is the Magnum 350 for $85. I have one on my 60 & 120 tanks and they both do a great job and are more then sufficient. http://www.petsolutions.com/Default.aspx?ItemID=47433504
