Filters

I love Cascade 1500 because it has power, the volume and it is quite.
The only flaw in it is that it require a double shut off.

I also love the Eheim 2028.
It has everything I want in the filter but the spray bar needs to be upgraded..

I use a Fluval 304 on my 55 gallon. It keeps the water crystal clear and is fairly quiet, athough sometimes it is tricky to prime after cleaning.
I had a Fluval 304 on a 55g marine aquarium I had setup next to my desk in the office. I was bad and didn't clean it frequently enough and one Sunday something clogged and the water pressure caused the seal to break and about 40 of those 55 gallons of water ended up on the floor. :(

There was even leakage in the office below mine (I'm on a second floor). :(

I've had great success with Fluval canister filters in the past but this was a "life changing" experience for me. :(

Peace...

I am not clear about something concerning the biowheel type filters. The pictures of these type of filters show them sitting on the side of the tank with no tank cover. I will be getting a new tank for Christmas, probably around 30-40g, and I will be using a tank cover for all the usual reasons. Up until now I have used a Fluval 2 plus internal filter on my 10g tank but if I want to change to these other types of filters, do they work with a tank cover in place? I do not want to continue using the internal filters because they are so bulky and hard to disguise so I am looking for alternatives.

I am a RFUG nut. very few if any of my tanks will ever be set-up without an RFUG. Too many advantages with minimal cost and easy maintenance.

On my 90G, I just converted my conventional UGF to a RFUG using 2 Penguin reverse flow kits with 1140s. Seems to be plenty of current under the plates with 1 head driving each 24x18 plate.

After doing this, I vacuumed the gravel and was amazed that I could pull up all the crap from under the plates. With the powerhead pushing water under the plate and the vacuum pulling it out, you get great suction under the plate. This is a huge advantage of the reverse flow I have not seen mentioned.

I have owned Eheim Classics in the past, and don't find them as "perfect" as many others do. In fact, I currently own four Fluvals. A 104, 204 and two 304's. I bought all four used, and though well used, they work great. A couple of them needed new motor seals, but instead, I just cleaned the motor seal in hot water and rotated its position. They are far easier to clean than my past eheims, and are extremely quiet! Good flow and keep the tanks very clean. I love em!

I also have a Jebo Odyssea CSF4 filter. It came new with a new tank. The tank has an overhead wet/dry filter system, but since I got the Jebo thrown in as part of the deal, hooked it up as an auxiliary. WOW! It's a large filter with lots of throughput for various media. The flow is good, even stacked to the limit with media, and it's quiet. Not as quiet as the Fluvals, but quiet nontheless! It's supposed to be a knockoff of the Eheim Pro II's, I understand. If so, then maybe Eheim has been vastly improved since I owned em years ago. At any rate, I don't know how the Eheims can be any better than the Jebo, especially at 2-3 times the price.

All in all, I think I prefer the look and the media baskets of the Jebo, but the absolute silence, aquastop and ribbed tubing of the Fluval make it a winner. Both brands filter all the junk out of the water as they're supposed to.

I've always used Marineland power filters, until this year and they work great. My only complaint is the noise.

last year i got a Vanguard wet/dry sump system to go with a tank with a built in overflow. Seems to work fine, only complaint is the noise. from the water falling

I'd like to try a canister on my smaller tank since hearing they operate very quietly, but the eheim with thermal costs 10x more than the Emperor that's on it now.

I got a new Eheim classic 2213 from Ebay and haven't used it yet but it doesn't look as wonderful as I have heard either. The outer casing is some sort of hi-tech hard plastic but when I got it one of the clip bases was busted. The seller replaced the casing but I'm thinking these tiny clips don't look very sturdy for long term use. Looks like a bear to clean too. I'm willing to try it out, I just need a bigger tank to go with it! I have a Fluval Plus 2 on my 10 gallon that works well and is easy to clean. It does take up a lot of internal room though.

power filters i like the aquaclears and the emperors.

cannisters i have a fluval 304 and a rena filstar xp2. i prefer the xp2 for ease of setup and the no bypass feature.

i also have a diy wet/dry sump and this is by far the best performing easiest to maintain filter i own.
