I recently bought a used 37g tank that only came with a stand (no hood or filter) I've been looking into filters and have come across these 4

I'm wondering which would be the best for my tank and the best deal price wise as I'm on a limited budget but don't really want to skimp on filtration.

If anyone has had any experience with any of these please let me know what you think and if you'd recommend or not and for what reasons. :)

Thank you!!!

I've heard good things about the AC but as craigthor mentioned, canisters are the way to go.

Out of those I would go with the AquaClear. I prefer cannisters myself though

I wish I could afford a cannister filter but working on a budget =/

Why would you go with the aquaclear?

Ebay you can get the SunSun cannister for about $50 to your door. I know quite a few using them on another forum with great luck. They are basically a Maineland knock off.

They are nice and roomy inside for whatever you want to throw in them. Both of mine lasted at least 3 years if not more.

You are referring to the aquaclear right? That's good to know

I wouldn't buy one of those off- brand caniter filters. I have heard nothing but bad things about their subpar quality and unreliability. You are better off getting a HOB filter or saving for a name- brand canister.

Of those HOB filters you listed, I have to say that the AC, penguin, and emperor should really be your choices. I would recommend any of those three to you. I really liked my penguins when I had them on my 37 and really liked the mid- and - low level intakes that they feature. This is a very important feature for a tall tank like a 37. The only reason I replaced them was because I got my C-360 canister. they were always super quiet as long as I kept the water level high enough so that the bottom of he filter's output was visibly under the water. I like having the bio wheels because the. I can move biological filtration between tanks, and then I can put whatever else in the other two slots in the filter.

Keep in mind that the emperor is essentially the same as the penguin, but it has an extra pump that sprays over the biowheel to keep them turning, but they also tend to be louder.

AC's are also silent, and offer plenty of media choices

Thank you for breaking that down for me! It all get's pretty confusing for me considering all the other tanks I've bought before were complete with filtration and all and I never had to worry about it.

It's especially helpful what you said about the Penguin being better for a tall tank. That is something I didn't consider before now.

Looks like it's between the AC and the penguin at this point

Why not get the best of all worlds and get the only canister HOB made which runs circles around Power filters for about the same price. The Sunsun would be good but it wont get your water polished crystal clear like a Magnum 250 and it circumference dual micron filter technology. Also the Mag 250 uses only 7 Watts of power.:grinyes:
