Which filter should I buy, the Fluval 404, or the Emperor 280?

There is NO expense involved in maintaining an Emperor 280 or 400. I have five Emperors, and I've never had to buy a single replacement part. Maybe you're talking about media? Don't buy drop-in cartridges. Cut some filter floss to fit the media baskets. At most , I've spent $5 on my filters in 2 years.

They're noisey when they are priming, but I don't consider them difficult.

Is 10 minutes spent cleaning a filter once a month too much work? I don't think it's too bad.

Anyway, my vote in this case is Fluval if that's the canister of choice.

Yea, I'm with Tfo on this one. My emperor is not difficult to clean at all. Everyweek, I take the media I made(polyester chair cushion) and run it on a rinse cycle in the dishwasher. Once a month, I clean the whole thing. I don't see what is so hard about that. Once every few months, I throw away the pads and make new ones. Very simple. If the fluval is on sale, get it or a Rena Filstar xP3.
