I was just looking at the Eheim 2026 and 2028 for my 150 gallon because I may have to add another filter (see my thread about the Fluval 404). The thing that bothered me was the flow rate. The 2028 is rated at 275 GPH. Says it's good for up to 180 gallon, but that rate is not nearly enough for me to think it would do a good job on a tank that size. My Fluval 404 pumps at 340 GPH plus I have a Tetratec PF500 that cranks at 500 GPH. That's 840 between them and I may still have to add another. Are you really stuck on getting a canister? If so, I found a Cascade 1500 will pump at 400 GPH. There is another thread going that is talking about 6-10 times flow compared to the tank. So for a 55 it would be between, 330 to 550 GPH. You might want to go take a look and I'll be keeping an eye on this one to see what everyone else thinks.

I personally keep two aquaclear 300s on my tank with no problems. The water quality is always where I want it. I also run a powerhead with an aquaclear minisponge attached to it.

10" dempsey
10" senegal bichir

6" cae
6" redtailed black shark
6" pleco
5 5" giant danios
2 3" convicts

Forget all that GARBAGE about that "generalized rule" of such and such gallons per hour. A canister filter is better at filtering than ANY HOB or simlar filter. The plus side to HOB's is the convenience of cleaning them. They do not force the water through the media like a canister does. Eheim is Top of the line, and has a lifetime reputation. It is well worth the investment. I have tried several different filters in my time with fish, and I have two different 55 gallons running right now. One has a Emperor 400 and a Whisper 300 (700gph nominal). This tank is my Blackbelt Cichlid tank (messy, large cichlid). My other 55 gallon is my high-light planted tank. This is currently running a Eheim ECCO 2233 canister and a Magnum HOT filter. It also uses pressurized CO2 which has a powerhead-driven reactor (Penguin 1140 - 300gph). I wish I could swap out the Mag HOT for another canister with slower flow. It is OK for now, but it does add quite a bit of current. This tank has a total of about 400gph and also the CO2 reactor adds another 300gph. This does have a prefilter on it so I consider it for filtration. I am even considering just using the ECCO and the CO2 reactor.

I would suggest (for most setups) to have 2 separate filters on a 4 foot tank. One might be able to do enough water turn-over, but it just can't keep enough water moving throughout the whole tank. This tends to cause water current dead-spots which accumulate wastes. I believe the ideal filtration for a 55 gallon (fully stocked, and able to handle about anything) is an Emperor 400 with a Eheim 2215 or Pro 2026. This would create beautifully clean water. You could also swap an AC500 for the EMP 400 if you desire less money, but great filtration.

Big als online has the best prices. I think the combo of a cannister and hob are the best. I use a filstar xp2 and a ac 300 on my 55. Works great. I add filter floss to both filters and I have sparkling clear water. Everybody has their own opinions but I have never seen anything bad about eheim. I will use them on my future 150 gal.

I like the ac filter because you almost never have to replace the media. I use a layer of filter floss and two sponges. I only replace the filter floss every 2 weeks. The top sponge gets rinsed once every 6 months.

I'd either go for just the canister or a combo of the 2. I run an ac300 + ac200 + fluval 304 on my 55gal... and I'm planning on picking up a eheim 2213 for a new 40breeder. The one drawback that I can think about for using a combo is the noise that a HOB is going to make...it cancels out the noiseless operation of your aquarium with a canister. Then again my ac200 and 150 are on larger tanks for extra filtering capability...but they aren't really made for the size of the lip on the larger tanks...so I get a lot of waterfall noise from those two. And from other forums, the 300's are the loudest of the whole aquaclear line. So you could always go with a ac500 and a canister as a one two punch. My 40 is going to be in my bedroom, so I want it to be silent... so no HOB for that one... the eheim should be able to handle the bioload.
