Which filter?

The only problem is that I am trying to keep the space inside my tank for fish not equipment, I just don't know if it is going to happen. :sad

Here is a Penn Plax Model 700 canister for $54.99 at Big Al's and here is aRena Filstar XP1 for only five dolalrs more. For the extra filtration and the reliability of Filstar, I think it's worth it to get the XP1. Canister filters are great for planted tanks as you can adjust the outlet for minimal loss of CO2. If room on back and room inside the tank is an issue, I would seriously spring for a canister on a planted tank.

I use penguins without the biowheels. Ive found them to be the quietest and most reliable of the Hob filters. My ACs tend to have issues restarting.

I use Aquaclears in all of my tanks. If the filter is dirty, or filled with plant debris, the impellor may not start spinning , so if the power went out for a moment, the impellor may not start when it goes back on.

To avoid this, I test by unplugging power cord for a minute or so, then plug it back in. If it starts up, all is good. If not, I clean out the filter, but don't remove the motor since this wears out the "o" ring.

For normal weekly maintenance I keep the filter running when I take the sponge and squeeze it out in old tank water.
