A few years ago I had a 37 gallon freshwater tank set up with some Gouramis and it did quite well. I haven't had it set up since we moved 3 years ago and I'm thinking about setting it back up again. I would like a small variety of fish that are easy to take care of. I was thinking of trying cichlids. Any recommendations on which ones?
Has anyone ever ordered online? If so, where? I live in a small town with one small pet store. The nearest big town is about 2 hours away.

Thanks

The majority of commonly available ones will eventually outgrow a 37. Though that's not to say you can't get any cichlids. Off the top of my head you could do some of these that are fairly easy.

Electric Yellow Hap
Electric Blue Hap
Kenyi Cichlid
Firemouth (not sure about this I think they stay small)
Convict cichilid

If you want a little more difficult one German Blue Rams are amazing looking fish and very fun to have. They are more sensitive to water conditions but if you understand how to care for an aquarium you should be fine.

I'm sure there are more, this is just off the top of my head. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Thank you

Thanks for the quick reply. Those are some pretty fish you listed. How many cichlids could I have in my 37 gallon? I forgot how the inches to gallons rule works. Are there any cichlids that are smaller...maybe 3-4 inches?

Thanks.

The smallest one I know of is the Blue Ram. the stay around 2 to 3 inches.

As for the 1 inch per gallon rule, that really isn't a good rule to follow. Sure 4 - 3 inch fish would probably be fine in a 20 gallon, but a 12 inch oscar is not ok in a 20 gallon tank.

In your case, it depends on what ones you decide to go with. If you get rams you can get more than if you go with the yellow haps or firemouth, or both for example. They get around 6 inches, while the rams are around 3 inches.

Also the blue haps will get to big, I forgot they get around 8 inches. I'd say the rams would be a very nice choice personally. They look amazing and when they are cared for right are very interesting to watch.

hope this info helps. Just trying to guide you in the right direction.

No problem. Research which ever fish you think you want to make sure you know what it needs before you buy any.

Blue Acaras are fun cichlids to keep.
