Which one would you say is "better": a Marineland 250 canister filter or a Penguin 330 power filter?

It depends on what you're planning on doing with the tank and how comfortable you would be doing cleanouts on a canister.
If you are comfortable with cleaning the can filter go with that. If not I would go with a bio-wheel over a regular power filter, they add that extra level of biological filtration.Just my 2 cents.
I'm not a fan of the marineland bio wheel HOB they seem to have a lot of water that does not go through the media. Magnum or a AquaClear 1100 HOB
I use both, the 250 would produce alot of current in a smaller tank, so it depends on tank size somewhat.Both are good filters......
