I am wondering if people would reccommend a 1st tank as a predaotory tank like snowflake eel and a trigger with no inerts etc( can you have snails with a trigger?) take care of.. Which is what we were planning on doing. However, Ive seen so may tanks just covered in algae etc. This made me wonder if we would be better off getting a community tank, clowns, chromis and a tang (which would feed on algae) with a clean up crew. What do you think for a first time setup?

The trigger and snowflake were my first fish they are both pretty hardy and they did great and my tank wasn't a pred tank they lived with a few others and never had any problems...but the eel will kill any crabs you might get. I remember when I first got into SW I rushed everything and I just bought 2 sallys and the eel sensed them from the minute they hit the bottom and he bit one right in the head and tied itself into a knot and tore it in half I just stared in amazment even though I had just lost 20 bucks in 20 seconds....

The notion of a predator tank is pretty exciting, and have you looked at GERMANMANNs? His is great. Are you talking about scorpion fish as well? I would certainly be up for triggers, puffers adn the like if I was doing a FOWLR tank, but don't know that I would be doing the scorpion fish.
The only thing I'll say about a pred tank vs. standard is that preds make a lot more waste and the tanks are harder to keep stable due to that. There are also major compatability issues with them as you have probably realised. Preds, are great but, small life is awsome to so you'll have to make some difficult decisions.
