Which Tunze wavebox controllers & Tunze pumps & how many

Not that I recommend this, but I read this recently on how to mod the Vortech to give you much more flow. Real risk of burning out the motor from what the article stated though if you run it at or near 100% to begin with. I was thinking about doing it on mine because I only run it at 50% anyway and I would like even more dispersed flow out of it. I don't care about it giving more power as well. Just need to have some replacement parts on hand to replace worn out bearings and drive shafts.

Just for informational purposes. ;)

I've been doing the same to my Tunze for years. My 6100 (old model) outputs more than a 6200 and my nanostream 6025s as much as 6055s (non-controllable, though). The good news there is that you can't burn up the motor this way and it does not, in any way, void Tunze's warranty of the pump (as confirmed by their reps). It only voids the volute/cage, not the whole pump.

From what I readied in that article it appears that the VorTech pump models arent ideal for any long term usage. It seems im no other choice in this matter but to go with the Tunze pumps and controllers. It appears to me Amphiprion that your suggestion is now my solution to what models I will have.

The only problem still is, I would like that by having four tunze, two on each end of the tank, that two would run, and switch off and the other two would switch on, how could I achieve this? And im sure that I will or may learn that other tunze pump models may be required in the future after the tanks filtration system begins.

So im looking at having now is two 6105s and two 6205s, any disagreements from anyone on this?

Tunze sells a Multicontroller that you can plug 4 powerheads into and create different flow patterns similar to the Vortechs. I really would not recommend doing a wave in an 8' tank, that is too much stress on the sides IMO. One advantage Vortech has over Tunze is they can link up wireless on the MP40w's.

The multicontroller will allow you to do what you want. I can pretty much tune it to a number of different setups. You may or may not be able to mod the newer 2nd gen Tunze models, but I suspect the same throttling techniques are used. If that is the case, you can easily mod the 6105s (and possibly even the 6205s) later without voiding the entire pump (the volutes/cages cost something like $22 to replace). It is something to consider without dropping the extra cash later when you may not have to.

I not knew that this rebuilding of my tanks would run me so high,. but the cost is even higher then last thought. :o:(:cry:

Folks, I'm still seeing that this rebuilding after paying some one else to set these tanks up to what I first wanted, it was done right, I would been on my way a long time ago. The situation is, I'm learning that the rebuilding cost will be even higher then last expected, for I'm figuring now that it will again be more then $10,000 before the 240 gal tank could be filled with saltwater. If I'm right, vim sorry to say then that I will not manage to start this tank in 2010.

I'm only able to put so much for the year into this, and again, I'm paying again for what some one never done right in the first place. Its terrible when a person is no longer able to do certain things for themselves due to their being disabled, if not for that, my age would have no factor here in delaying me any at all doing the work myself. Its far easier for me to help care for my grandchildren then the heavy things that needs to be done for this tank.

I'm sorry I not seen this coming, but I can not be upset about this when I'm all so well knowing of the cost for a well build SPS marine system. I last thought that the cost was to be under $8,000, and now with my further search to make this tank system complete, the cost will top $10,000.

This is the way I'm viewing this:

Lights, I need another $1,000

For a well setup water currents cost, im seeing that it can and will be more then $2,000

UV and two Iwaki return pumps (external) with a UV estimated at $1,000

pluming (PVC) with labor cost; Unknown at this time

I paid for everything else, the used equipment and stand and canopy>
I believed that I mentioned this, I'm only able to put together for the tank in a years time frame, anywhere from $4,000 to $4,500 and the cost above don't even count in the generator I'm to have if any emergencies arises. I do however have a gas generator the should run the life supports of the tank only.

Please, no suggestions for cheaper products, I still want to do this rebuilding once and properly, if it is that I have too wait another year due to the unexpected high cost, I will have to just wait. Know this, some 2.5 years ago i told Jeff of fish world that I will not wait any more on him to do this right, that no matter if I had to wait another 3-4 years before its done right, I will wait for I would then know that it was done, and done right. Those people were my words to the store owner who installed the tank , and done it all wrong and that is why I'm facing to pay again for the same work one other not done correctly as he should.

For those who not know or remember, Fish world had the tank stand build just 24" high under the tank, he put on this tank, a 1/4 HP chiller which would in due time burn itself out, I paid him to put in 4x 250 watts MH and he put in 175 with only two VHO bulbs, TWO!! With no reflectors for the VHO`s. NO cooling fans in place, and later when the tank was to remove the LR from it and remove the return pump he put on this tank was the last draw, he put on a 240 gal SPS tank, a rio that pumps under 900 gph. When I learn this, I realized even more how right I was not to trust him any more to do my tanks right.

Right now, I'm looking over a number of links for the Tunze equipment, there will be questions later on which to get and for the next few months, I will save to buy those items.

Please do believe me when I tell you that I'm not happy of learning that there will be further delays in starting this tank. I figure that I waiting all this time, what is another year or so? And you readied my words I said and wrote to Jeff of fish world, that even if I had to wait another 3-4 years, I will have a far better system then what he was building for me.
I just a while ago sent xmas center pieces to two of my doctors, James I sent a huge plant for his house, im just a few more people to take care of and the saving will begin, this I can promise you all.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE :)

hmotorsol, I called rather then too email my questions to thefragguys.com for due to certain disability problems, I felt that it would be best to call person to person. I have a number of things to do today, including picking up early from school my youngest grandson for his doctor appointment. And I need to get certain other thing done, for starting next week from the 21st until the 3rd or 4th of Jan, when the kids will return to school, I will have them both weeks most of the time for their daddy`s job calls for a judge to be on duty 24/7 and next week his hours are until 2am and after Xmas his hour will be until 6am.

Anyway, I called because of my disability problems in how im not all the time in these forums best explain myself to what my question is. So they will call me later, Ron isn't there until about 1:30 this afternoon and then we will talk about both, the vortech mp40w's and tunzes Pumps.

I was collecting from searching the web, links with these pumps and waveboxes and such. Again, is it a bad idea to have a wavebox really? Im i too only get a quote for the controllers and pumps only? Also I will want the magnets and I believe pads for the magnets.

The tanks glass thickness appears to be 1/2" thick, I see no reason why James couldnt do a closed loop for me. I was just thinking, what if i try calling around to see if some other person can drill the six holes for the closed loop. I mean, it still wouldn`t change much in the cost of the rebuilding of this tank, but likely it might add on some extra cost. If so, I can deal with that, its fine by me as long as I have what i want most for the best possible filtration system for this unit.

I need to know what best to ask for from Rob when he calls me on either vortech mp40w's or tunzes Pumps and controllers, I see from searching the web that the controller 6094 is no longer being sold, so im guessing the 6095 is it to ask for, or about? Forgive me if I forgotten the model number of these units, I try hard to remember and most times its not so easy. The easiest thing I can remember are my grandchildren, im not complaining any on that account.

Im thinking i will try the hardest I can to get the complete cost for the remaining cost for the rebuilding of this tank, but then I still however have the 40 gal breeder QT, that too was setup like junk. It was drilled at the back of the tank, rather then under the tank for the tanks overflow. Im thinking sense the nothing much of anything I require in this 40, that I should get a all new tank and stand to replace it all.

So whatever extra time frame this will take to do this, im no other choice but to do so, you all readied what I told the store owner of fish world, if I have to wait, i will wait it out, but the pay off however should feel great when all said and done.

Rob has my cell number to call me being i will be out and rather busy, but its no reason why I shouldn't get the ball rolling on this and see what his best price quote will be. I will post it tonight, it might be sometime after 9 PM my time before i could, and you fellas can tell me what if its worth going for or not. I figure the best I could do by the end of March, i could have $2,000 together by that time for these pump and controllers and a wavebox if agreed to that its ideal, if not, I can leave it out.
Please tell me what your thoughts are to this matter.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE :)

One thing is changing at this time, I called around to other aquarium service people and they will call me back with a price quote to drill the tank and place in the bulkheads needed for a 1" pvc.

I called person to person in W. Virginia to a Rob who said he could offer me a certain deal on either pump sets. Still, I know that even by getting the drilling done and bulkheads in, it changes nothing in the cost of this tank, a matter a fact, it may be even a higher price tag to rebuild my 240.

Im a old hand at having a marine system and know that if a person wants something good, they just have to pay for it, and in my case, im paying for it again to do the same tank, but im glad of one thing, I believe due to my age and patience I stuck with this idea all this time with little to no changes in my plans for it.

My thoughts and dreams for this tank will remain intact. However im sad to not thought of certain cost items sooner and this thread with the knowledge that I will have further delays because of it, I wouldn't had began this thread on the assumption that I would had this tank ready and completed in a matter of 5-6 months. :(

I not know if I said this part im about the say, but I called around yesterday to other lfs owners for asking of them about doing for me a closed loop, if this can be done later on, I first need the new stand and 125 gal tank sump. My idea is that I would do the closed loop first before buying the pumps and controllers for the tanks water currents. In any case im sure that it will only add to the cost that I would still be needing 3-4 pumps still with controllers.

Yes I know, im willing to spend more for what I want most for this system, but I had this so well planned from the start, but it wasn't done correctly as I instructed the owner of fish world in what i wanted most for this system. Cost wise now could even be greater then $11,000. I know I could do this either way, with or without a closed loop, but this 240 gal SPS reef tank has been a long term dream of mine, I wish for it to be something, look like something done to look like a TOTM or year for that matter.

I need however to make a decision on the 40 gal breeder tank, being that is, it was drilled at the back of the tank, and everything as well needs to be done to the sump and skimmer. Again, this will only add to the cost even more so, but I need this 40 breeder QT in place with the main tank. It will however be in a different room of the house.

Only now am I getting a cost for what im wanting to have done, James has been extremely slow in giving me any price quotes, and it was only recent his giving me one for the tank stand and canopy. Still no quote on the main filtration cost and we already know the two return pumps I will have.

There is still questions to be ask here, one is, which UV should i go with? And im quite sure with that, im all done as far as any further equipment for this tank. James as well knows all about the number of cooling fans he will build into this setup. I will later after the holidays sometime go to downunder and speak with the person they have for this closed loop and I will first pay for that and then perhaps James work to be done after that with the two main pumps and plumbing work. I will contact Rob who spoken to on the pumps and controllers, he said he could work me out a deal, im not totally sure that his offer would be so much of a great deal or not, but one thing is for sure, with having the closed loop, I not need to think about buying a wavebox then for sure. And then the pumps may even be less, only time will tell once the system is up and running.

Now I like to know something from you all, Would you care that I taking my time and done things as best as I can or setup fast with what I have and buy what few pumps I can and buy more later as the tank ages with live stock.

Buddy

Absolutely take your time and do it right the first time. If you start to rush things now for your dream SPS tank it will more than likely cause you more headaches down the road. You have had incredible patience with this project so far, don't run out at the very end.
