I just bought a whiptail cat and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them?

There are a couple different fish called a whiptail cat--some are really long and thin, also called a royal farlowella. The other is in the loriicaid family, shaped like a sturgeon, with little, feathery like spikes on the fins, and a long thread-like piece coming off the top of the tail fin. I have three of these. They are about 6-7 inches long (not included the 'whip') and are very peacefull. They eat just about anything, but seem to prefer a bit of meatiness to their diet. They need caves or overhangs to hide out in, and will bury themselves if provided with sand or very small, smooth gravel. Neat fish--I'm hoping mine will breed.

I have a whiptail cat, I found a pic of the variety I have in the link below:

I have mine in a 10gal and I love it! I'm planning on getting a new 20 (or maybe 30) gal and plan on moving it in there and get another companion for it.

Everything I ever read about it says that this fish is shy and likes places to hide, I have several hiding places, but mine seems content out in the open. It's favorite spot is atop a piece of driftwood, or hanging vertically on my plastic plants.

It shares the tank with some cories and a few tetras, I feed flakes, as well as sinking algae tabs and bloodworms. In addition to sucking on the driftwood/plants it also seems to bottom feed with the cories.

Mine is about 4 inches long and has been a wonderful addition to my community tank!

i have a red whiptail and find i never see him in the day he either hides behind the filter or in the plants but as soon as the light goes of he is a nut case! swimming everywhere and enjoying himself. nocturnal me thinks! i love him thought and i think im going to get another one preferably a common one to pair him with. great fish! has survived through thick and thin aswell, rock solid fish!

This thread is 7 years old...

Feel free to start a new one if there's interest in whiptails. I enjoy mine very much. Will reopen this one if the OP returns and requests it.
