My filter has the function to control the flow of water by turning a nob at the top of the suction tube. Do i need to keep this open fully at all times?

No, but the higher the flow is through the filter, the better the bacteria will work. They can only remove the wastes as they come into contact with them, so more flow through the media, the more contact. Turning it down is sometimes needed to adjust for tank size (since filters come with a range, like 10-29), or to reduce current for specific fish that need calmer waters.

Just wondering thats all. I keep in open full all the time, my angel like to sit in it's current.
