I just got a used one from someone but I noticed the small box that houses the motor twitches back and forth if I move it....is it supposed to be like this? Can I detach the motor box?

worried it will leak

Hi there, if it is the motor housing with impeller (I think they refer to that as the energizer) then it might be missing the o-ring for the seal. You should be able to rotate it (about 90 degrees I think) and remove it. Unless it is just not be seated properly.

But either way, there should be an o-ring in there I am pretty sure...

Yeah the motor housing twitches back and forth and that doesn't seem right....I put some water in there and it's not leaking.....how do I see if there's an o-ring? I can't twist off the motor.

If it is an Internal filter, then the motor 'capsule' just snaps onto the filter body. If it is an External filter (HOB), then the impeller motor should twist /rotate. I think it should turn about 90 degrees or so, then it can drop out. I have both an internal and external 10, and an external 60.

I have a Whisper 40 (and a 10 and 2 60's)...the 'motor' housing is removable and will move if you turn it. if it's "straight"...aligned with the housing, and not leaking, umm...it's working don't fix it :)

If the o-ring was missing you'd know it...t'would leak.

It should be fine. My SN Whisper filter used to do that until I replaced the o-ring. Just call Tetra they give free o-rings out.

To remove the Energizer:

1. Take the filter to the sink and remove the WonderTube, Bio-Bag, and Bio-Foam.

2. Turn the filter upside down and twist the Energizer 90 degrees AWAY from the filter box.

3. Holding the Energizer with one hand while the other is on the Bio-Bag chamber holding the filterbox stable, rock the Energizer back and forth while pulling upward. The Energizer should come right out.

To replace the Energizer, lubricate the o-ring with NON MEDICATED petroleum jelley or water. Reverse the above steps. When it is back together, fill the WonderTube chamber and Bio-Bag chamber with water to ensure that it doesn't leak. Re-install filter on tank.

Hope this helps!!

very pleased with the tetra service....they will be mailing me one! thanks for the responses!

Tetra does have great customer service. Did you remove the motor with those step by step instructions? I tried to be as clear as possible. While you have the old o-ring on there, you may want to practice removing and replacing the Energizer. I can now do it in seconds, both remove and replace. If you did remove it, was it easy for you?

Daniel

Edited to let you know that they typically send you two o-rings in a letter envelope with NO instructions. If you call or e-mail them asking them to send you a manual, they will. It has detailed instructions on doing all of the maintenance of the Whisper filter....or you can just ask us!! lol

To be honest I haven't tried to remove it yet...will do it when I get the o-ring....how long do you think I have to wait for it?

Its amazing how far this companies will go to keep the customers happy. BRAVO!
