Are these Whisper Power Filter's acceptable to use? The bio filter is just a sponge that you are supposed to clean off when it gets clogged up? won't it just rinse off the bacteria?

Where is the bacteria formed when cycling a tank? is it in the substrate, water, filter, etc. or just in the filter?

Thanks.

Bacteria will be on/in the surfaces such as the live rock for instance. I have a whisper filter on the used set-up I bought for my QT tank but I'd not opt for it on the display tank.

What kind of tank are you trying to set up? Size? FO/FOWLR/Reef?

I am actually setting up a brackish tank. Its 30 gallons, and I had gotten a whisper power filter 30 for free, so I was just going to use it if it is acceptable.

I already have a tank with an internal filter that has mudskippers and bumblebee gobies but I want to make the tank more natural for the mudskippers and that is going to include taking the gobies out (so they will go in the new tank). My long term goal would be to add a figure 8 puffer as well to the tank.

I was going to cycle with Bio Spira but I didn't know if I decided to change filters down the line, if I would need to cycle the tank again. How will I know if the whisper is inadequate? nitrite/nitrate levels? water color?

Thanks!

I'll post over on the brackish forum but I thought this was more of a newbie question.

so in general, if I get a new filter, will I need to re-cycle the tank?

Brackish is really a different animal that what the marine newbie stuff would be. They'll sincerely be glad to help you in that forum and I'm guessing you'll have a lot more input on a brackish question.

A marine cycle is different than a fw cycle..not sure about a brackish cycle.

basicaly the same as sw. it is the same BB. i use a whisper filter and a fluval filter on my brackish tank.
