right now I have a whisper filter that uses the carbon in the meshy bag. I want to convert this to a sponge filter (I like the idea of rinsing a reusing something for years, rather than replace something monthly spending more money and effort than I should and my tank is planted).

I am trying to figure what the sponge part is. can I use an unfilled messhy bag that normally has the filter in the clip thing, or is the sponge a whole different material? My onine search for this was futile. I think I am looking in the wrong places, so I came here.

If I can just use the bag thing then I was going to clip it into the plastic frame and stick that in the tank?
thanks!

For my whisper I just bought and oversized sponge at teh fish sotre (I think they were meant for canister filters of something) and then I cut them to fit in the opening of the resevoir. I cut it a little big and cramed it in and I have been using that sponge for 2 years now, just rinsing it out every few weeks.

what does a sponge look like? is it the white fibery bag? or is it like a kitchen sponge, ot is it specially ridged to build up more bacteria?

That looks like it will work fine.

MOst pet stores will sell sponge inserts of some kind. Make sure to get one for an aquarium though as some sponges for kitchen and bathroom use come with dyes or soap built in or other exciting additives that would kill your fish.
