I got this white and brown algae growing on my driftwood, is this stuff dangerous or a sign of something dangerous? I had barbs in my tank for the break in period, but for the last 3 days after I removed the fish I've really noticed this algae.

any help is appreciated.

The white algae probably isn't algae... my guess is that it's mold or fungus growing on the wood.

Do you have any pics of the wood? Where did you get it from? If it is fungus or mold, it's dangerous. It means you should give it a good scrub and soak it in hot water (boiling if possible, but hot water in a bath tub is okay).

Then if it continues to grow fungus/mold after putting it back in the tank, then you don't want it in your aquarium.

As for the brown stuff... is your tank cycled? Have you tested your water recently? I would suggest doing 50% water changes once a week if you aren't already.

I havent tested it yet for nitrates, I dont have a tester. The driftwood was bought at my LFS Big Al's.

I will try the soaking in hot water like you mentioned and we'll go from there.

Any more input is appreciated.
