I'm thinking about moving 5 whitecloud minnows into a tank with my betta. are they nippy? will they eat his fins.

I've had white clouds in with my bettas before. No problems at all. My tank is at 80 degrees F. They seem to do well. By that I mean I haven't lost one in well over a year! They're a good fish to keep with bettas in my opinion. Fast enough to aviod an agressive betta and not nippy so the betta isn't hurt. I've had three bettas in my main tank in the past two years all had a very distinct level of agression. My current betta just moved into my main last month after I broke down the last of my small tanks in favor of having one large tank. I'd say at least three of my white clouds are almost two years old and have survived all three bettas. Take from that what you will but I give you a thumbs up so long as the tank is at least a 20 gallon or so. You need room for all the fish and still need good water perams. But I'll leave the preaching to others...

Right now I have a 10gallon in my room with just a betta. i was thinking about adding the 5 whiteclouds. i dont think that would be overstocking. I mean the betta just hides in the plants most of the time its kinda boring lol.

That woudl be fine in a 10 gallon. I had that setup for awhile with no problems. White Clouds do best at lower temps as other say, but it is generally the higher oxygen levels in the lower water that is needed. So keep the aeration in the tank high and keep some plants and you will do fine.

My one problem was that my betta wasa very slow and picky eater, he always liked to stare at the food for awhile. The White Clouds though wanted to grab as much as they could really fast. I essentially trained them to eat from separate corners of the tank. Might not be the same with you, just keep your eyes open to it.

It was always funny to watch teh gang of White Clouds start to sneak up on the betta, he would turn and flare and chase them away. All good fun and no nipping at all.

Sometimes i turn off the filter at night cuz its too nosy. I know the betta is okay cuz he can pretty much breath the air and i dont think the biofilter will die for my 10gallon or if it even matters if it dies if i have one betta.

I wouldn't turn the filter off at night if you add the white clouds. They would get way to stressed if they need a high oxigen level. BUT! There are a few tricks you can use to keep a filter quiet at night. Of course that assumes you have a hang on back filter like a Penguin or Whisper. If you keep the water level so that is covers the edge of the out flow lip. It'll keep it silent. You don't need a bubble stone to keep the water oxigenated you just need the surface to ripple. You might be able to mod the out flow with some plastic so the water doesn't splash in the tank. Personally I thought my penguin miny was really quiet when I still had my 10 gallon setup. I just had to make sure to top off the tank when it started to bug me at night. Give it a try before you buy them.
