White Crayfish & Blue Lobsters

Yep missed it myself......

I'm pretty good at seeing when a post was reopened by a newb or a lurker but this one slid right past....

First of all, are you sure which species of crayfish you have? It really sounds like you have a Marble Crayfish which is procambarus sp. marmokrebs. They come in different shades other than just brown or tan, depending on water qualities and/or diet. You could have very well had a marble that was blue and hence the sudden outbreak. These crayfish can reproduce asexually through a process called parthogenesis or self-cloning. So in other words they don't need a mate. In fact they are all female species and make babies every 6 to 8 weeks once they mature. Don't release them into the wild or you could destroy a local ecosystem of crayfish. These crays carry a deadly spore to other crays that they are immune to. Only one way to find out if you have a marble cray. Isolate one at a young age...if it matures and reproduces with nothing else in the tank...then that's what you have. Just a certain shade of blue! Good luck...and FYI...they make good live food for other fish or you can use them as fishing bait, but make sure they are frozen and dead before you hook em up!
