white crusty dirt

can someone please tell me what this white substance is? it all around the top of my tank on the hood and the center brace which is where the pic is showing.

It looks like mineral deposits from your tap water. What are your GH/KH reading on your tap water? Do you add salts?

I have very hard water, and I usually try to remove those stains with vinegar, but only on the removable aquarium parts that don't come in contact with aquarium water. Rinse the vinegar well off before putting the cover back. I haven't tackled the problem for the fixed aquarium parts yet.

i am not sure what my gh/kh is as i do not have a test for them as yet, plan on getting that one today. and i do use aquarium salt every water change.

Well, salt is easy to remove. It will leave stains everywhere, but can be simply washed away with a damp cloth. Not sure why you use salt, though .
