White floss for Filstars

yea it would work, pack enough in there to catch all the stuff but not tight enough to restrict water movement.
 
I wouldn't. You need to have a step or grade of mechanical filtration for your filter to work properly (unless you plan on cleaning it very often). The incoming water should pass through media with larger bypass first, followed by smaller bypass, and pass through the finest material last. This allows the bigger "gunk" to get trapped first that would otherwise plug up the next in line media (the finer media). None of your media is going to work well if the first media is plugged and restricting water flow!

If you really aren't getting much dirt out of your black sponges, replace the more porous ones (20 pore per inch) with white floss but keep the finer black sponge (30 pores/inch) in line before the floss. Good luck!
 
I heard that the polyester filling or batting you can get al walmart for like 1.50 for a huge bag works really well...ill be trying some on my XP3 when i get it.
 
Just my preference, but I get the polyester(from Walmart) sold for making baby crib mattresses. Its sold in a roll and is 1/4" thick. Cut a square and you're good to go. Double or triple the thickness if you want.
 
I took out all of the black sponges a long time ago and I only use floss and it is great. Works terrifically and I would recommend it to anyone. So easy to change it once a week and it is very cheap. I see no real difference in flow rate.
 
So-so I guess. I have enough in there that its a pain to get the next basket over it because it keeps comming over the sides. Its enough to stay with ceramic rings and bioballs in the top two baskets. If the baskets were empty, they wouldn't stay down on the bottom basket.
