I have a 35g Hex. I have had 7 harlequins in it for about a week. When I added them, I also added some birospira. I took my water to be tested at the LFS and they said I had 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and trace amounts of Nitrates. I have about 4 plants in the tank as well. I just added 2 small Angel Fish last night. I was admiring my fish when I noticed some of my driftwood has fuzzy white stuff growing all over it. Does anybody know what this could be?

it's mold. dormant spores on the wood were just waiting for moisture ... so when you put the wood in the tank, voila. just suction it off and soon it will stop returning.

I just wrote a letter to the company that distributed my driftwood I was so upset because I love the piece and no matter how much I scrubbed it and boiled it this stuff kept coming back, then I think it was Pixie that said she threw hers away because of it so I was even more upset..

So the company in question responded that it is perfectly normal but may take up to a month to disappear for the exact reason as liv2 described, it seems like it has taken ages to get better but it has and realistically it's only been 2 weeks but it looked so ugly and my fish wouldn't 'go near it until it got scrubbed and boiled....

The company said to keep soaking it in warm water, and if in 1 month it was still bad write to them again and they would take care of it for me..

I think one more boil and my piece will be perfect...
It seems like it takes forever but it wont.
My cories actually seem to like it but it soon grew back too much for them to handle so then I'd boil it again etc...
I think I have boiled it 4 times total..

I also found mold on my driftwood (initially I thought it was just flake food my fish didn't eat). Smallfishi was probably right about boiling. When I got my driftwood back from the river, I ran it under hot tap water for about 5 mins. Although like I said, it still had some mold on it after being in the tank for a few days, the mold was minimal and I believe it was all gone after about less than a week.
