I asked this question in my thread about the flame gouramies, but i thought i may get a quicker response by posting a seperate one now that i am pretty sure it is sick.

What i thought was a wound from the other gourami has now either become infected or is some sort of disease. I dont know much about illnesses that fish get so can someone tell me how i can treat it or what it is so i can look it up?

It appears to be a white growth..similar to a mold or fuzz. Also, is this contagious?

thanks

I just noticed the same think on one of my Serpae tetras yesterday. I am 90% sure its fungus. I went to my LFS, got maracyn and put half a tablet in a bucket of tank water with an old filter. The fish is in there now and he is living. I will be treating until saturday when I do my usual water change, unless he is still sick. I would put your fish in a quaranteen tank and medicate as quickly as possible.

Is fungus or columnaris, in either case treat with Maracyn.
good luck
:)

I got some maracyn tabs today and put them in the tank and realized they expired in April...does this go bad? I plan on taking them back to the pet store tomorow and either getting them to swap it out or get the money back and buy some more of it.

My betta also has spot of his body that doesnt look good and what looks like fin rot, so i decided to just medicate my entire tank. I hope this works, i will let you know in a few days.

I am also setting up a 10 gallon for either a hospital tank or possibly in a few months a tank for some glass cats or maybe dwarf puffers.

oh yeah, the package says it disolves rapidly, its been 2 hours or so since i droped them in and there is still about 1/4 of them left...is this normal or do you think its from it being expired.

thanks

If the medicine is expired, replace it. There's a good chance it wont work at all.

It does take a while for the tabs to dissolve.

A hospital tank is advised.

good luck
:)

Well i got some new maracyn, and set up my 10gal. and put my gourami and betta in it...but im afraid it may be too late. The gourami has been laying on his side all day and the betta cant even swim straight..but im going to keep trying until they both are dead.

Any reason why they may have gotten this in the first place? I am pretty sure the water is right for both of them...from the what i have read about there requirements anyway. I have been changing 25% of the water out weekly.

This makes me want to just give up this hobby...

don't give up, that's the name of the game. if i tell you how many fish comes and go thru. my door....lol (even bill gate wouldn't spend that money on fish)
they live, they die ,they play is mother natural just like human
I have less and less fish is going to die on me. I try to select only 3 - 4 different types of fish that i am going to buy and make sure they can get along fine and hope for the best.

well they both died last night, i guess i will wait a few weeks and make sure everything is right with my tank before i replace them...
after i have done a little more reading on why this may be happening, i will probably liberate another betta from the plastic cup its being held in at the pet store.

thanks for the help, i think i just didnt get the medication in time to help them. but i stilll have most of it incase any others get it...and i know what to look for this time...

sorry to hear that, you know what ? i tell you a sad story happen to me last jan 2003.
i have around 25 cardinal in my 100 gals tank over 6 months, gone for holiday for 3 weeks in dec. come back do the water change and everything is find. at the end of jan my birthday i went to pick up some more fishs for my tank cost me a lot of money, i wen t to a fish store that i trust, get another 20 cardinal and 3 other fish and 16 shrimps (can't recall what they call). the owner of that fish store say his fish is good don't worry just dump them into the tank.
o.k I trust him, 3 days later the fish (all of them) dieing one by one with no sign. call him up and he ask me to do this do that, finally all my fish is dead. except 3 of them, took it back to the store, tell them all my fish is dead, his wife do a water test and say my water have nitrate, as a matter of fact she is lieing to me.
since the water she test is very very light blue which is good. (i found that out later after i purchase my own test kit).
and i never go back to his store anymore. then I purchase from another store and my fish is o.k since beginning of feb.
how i learn something, i have to learn all this myself or getting help from people like here and you will feel go about it.
.....lol
