I have a 10g tank that has 7 white skirt tetras and a betta in it, it was only 4 tetras until a week ago, I got the other 3 last week, because the only time the 4 tetras really schooled together was when they were hungry and when its feeding time.. otherwise they would just sit around in they're own lil spaces and not interacting much with each other.. I have been reading they do better in grps of 6+ so I picked up 3 more of them last week.. and its still the same.. the only time they actually school together is when I feed em..
Is this normal behavior for tetras? or am I possibly feeding them too much and theyre getting fat and lazy? >.<
I try not to feed too much but with 8 fish.. its hard for me to judge wether they all are getting fed, so I might be feeding to much.. would it be better for me to underfeed? will they stay more active if they are hungrier.. >.<
I've taken out and moved a few decorations around to possibly give them a bigger swim area, but still they just sit around most of the time.
I keep the tank pretty clean..
I do a gravel vac once a week, turn off the filter and aeration stone while doing this, doing the gravel vac takes out about 50% of my water, after I refill the tank, I add the correct dosage of AquaSafe (for the tap water that I put back in about 5g) and the correct dosage of EasyBalance, both made by Tetra, then add a tab of Correct Ph Tank buddies made by jungle. I'm not sure if these steps are correct to take, but so far, my tank has been staying clear and the test strips come out great.
So I dont think its the water quality that is preventing the schooling.. I would buy a few more.. but i'm not sue a 10g would be good for 10- 11 fish.. I'm pretty sure im maxed out with the 7 tetras and 1 betta.
