I don't see a photo but my guess is you're probably seeing spirobid worms. Tiny little filter feeders that have hard tubes like featherdusters.
Hitchikers and they aren't a concern in a new tank. I have found them on rocks, the glass, the equipment, the snails. If they bother you on the glass your MagFloat or a scraper will get them off easily.

How well do the mag-floats work? I opted for a lower cost option, it doesn't get tough algae and often plunges into the sand bed if you go too quickly. A huge pain, because if you get grains of sand on the pad...scratches on the glass.

You have to be careful not to get sand in the magfloat as well and it won't get off coraline that has been there for a bit but it is good for regular upkeep.
yea, I decided to try a cheaper version, as well and it leaves streaks on the inside of the glass, like leaves lines of algae. Going to get the real thing because the lines annoy me like no other. There's nothing I can do with the cheapy to get of the lines. My cats are fascinated by the magnet thinger though.
I like my magfloat for a daily swipe of the glass but use other cleaners for the weekly cleanings.
