One of my Glowlight tetras has stopped swimming with the shoal and now hangs around by itself. I noticed it has some white stuff on its tail. I'm not sure if it is a fungus or bacterial, and I'm having trouble getting a clear picture. Still, I'm worried that it may spread to the other fish in my tank. Right now I have a Betta tank that is undergoing treatment with Tetracycline - do you think it is a good idea to isolate the tetra and treat it in the Betta tank, just to be safe?

Well if it's a parasite ,that is already it the tank, Q'ing him might not help. watch the other fish for same. IE if you just seen it , an the fish is showing signs of it , that parasite or fungus in is the tank aready , these new or have they been in there? Safe ? could put him in there , but i would keep an eye on all the other tank inhabitints

I doubt its anything as severe as Lymphocystis. These are new fish of only a few days, so I suppose this could just be something opportunistic because of stress. My water parameters are fine, so hopefully this will resolve itself... I would add aquarium salt but I have Corys that wouldn't tolerate it.

Corys can tolerate noramal doses of aquarium salt,, i just did it to treat Ich , clown loaches don't like it but can live with it., 1 dead cardianil out of 2 weeks treatment Whew , there is a god

i have had a similar thing on one my glowlight tetras , same behavioral symptoms too , it was on his back . some tetras do get a zit type thing but white , when they hit maturity . i'm not saying that this is what it is but it is a possibility . salt would be a good thing as a precaution . by the way mine didnt make it .it wasnt eating and started to look and behave like normal then died . keep a close eye on him and the rest of the inhabitants . i also have a red minor tetra that has one on his lip , been there for 4 months , he has no problems at all .

good luck

Good stuff... what dose of salt do you guys recommend? I usually go for 3 teaspoons per 5 gallons, which would mean 12 teaspoons in 20 gallons.

i wouldnt like to speculate on the amount of salt but for ich i treat with 3 teaspoons per gallon or 3 tablespoons per 5 gallons , but as i said i am not recommending this with the coreys in there . hopefully tjr635 will jump in and tell you better . by the way , have you noticed a lack of coloring , the bright red may fade but the orange may all but disappear .

No, it's just the tail... the bottom is slightly ragged and white (the others are clear). I don't think this is Ich, but the salt is not a bad idea as a precaution.

Update: Tetra died... that's the third one in 4 days. Part of it's tail was completely gone. The remaining 4 seem fine. Perhaps the deaths were due to stress of moving.
