ooh, internal parasites can lead to white stringy poop. that kinda sounds like what you're describing. I'm not sure, though, so you should wait for someone else to chime in.
If it is IP's, the best way to treat is with medicated food because it goes straight to the source of the problem. I use Gel-Tek Ultra Cure PX and soak their regular food in it. If the fish is not eating, then you can medicate the tank with something like Jungle's Internal Parasite Guard.
no, i haven't been quarantining new fish, what is involved, putting them in a separate tank or is there medications involved, and i don't think the shark jaw is it, i took that out a good month before the diseases started
hate to say it, but thats pretty much a sure fire symptom of internal parasite infection.
look up internal fish parasites online (dr fosters, etc) and find the correct medication. I know PraziPro is safe for all your fish in your tank and could be very effective. Might want to check that.
boulderman, quarantining requires a separate tank. If you use a tank divider, water will still flow between the sides, and also bacteria and other pathogens. It's best to keep new fish in the QT for at least 2 weeks. A month is even better, because some diseases don't show up for awhile. There is really no need for meds unless something indeed happens to be wrong with the new guy(s). That's why the quarantine tank often is used also as a hospital tank. They're usually smaller than the main tank, so cheaper and easier to medicate, as well as to observe fish in.
sorry things are turning out so poorly for you We all go through it, though. The learning curve is very steep in the beginning.
boulderman, I had 3 powder blue dwarf gourami who all died from some kind of parasitic infection. The first one had more swelling before white strands, so I didn't catch it in time. They all died because of that--I would definitely follow plah's advice with the meds!!! She knows what she's talking about, and I wish I'd had that advice when the boys started showing up with symptoms. So sorry about it, but catch it NOW!! You have a chance to save him. :dance2:
Yep, I've had Gel Tek brand internal parasite meds recommended to me on another forum. I'm about to start treating my dwarf puffers as a precaution as they're very prone to them. I'll let you know how it goes!
Absolutely you should treat before it gets too bad. They can definitely die of internal parasites and spread them to your other fish
