several yrs ago i enjoyed keeping these fish about 7 mos ago i got back into the hobby - i was wondering why i couln't find this fish anywhere!!! I live in MA and i guess they are illegal because they are are foreign fish that can survive coldwater!!! now i understand that if people release foreign fish it can screw up the eco system ,,, but c'mon whiteclouds!!! I doubt they coul survive our winters the water has to get down to the 30's here , plus they woul prob be gulped up by bass anyhow - other "cold water" fish are legal such as goldfish or paradise fish etc- anyones elses state oputlaw these lil' guys
also i am thinking about ordering them online woul this be illegal? you think the co woul ship them to me???

Ah Canada... where our motto is, "Even if it does survive the winter, a sturgeon or muskie (or char, or pike, or lake trout) will probably eat it."

you know, someone said to me that they were illegal here in New Hampshire (which makes sense if they are in mass), but if you want 'em you can find 'em here! Right in the seacost area. I see them all over the place, illegal or not. Kind of makes that law pretty useless, now doesn't it?

The most likely explanation is that the white clouds displace and compete with a native fish of a similar size and feeding habit. Survival overwinter is actually more likely than you may think, as many fish can tolerate such cold temps, well outside their normal parameters, depending on other conditions. White clouds are hardy enough that I bet they will survive.

Since the banning of a specific species is often done on the state level, it is not surprising that nearby states do not have similar laws. As for finding illegal fish in the stores--the individual shippers and retailer are responsible for determining if a species is legal. Many 'slip through the net', either by accident or intention. For example, in Wyoming channel catfish are not legal aquarium fish without an appropriate permit, but they are often seen for sale in local stores. Colorado has no such restriction, so they are easiy obtained, albeit illegally.

If your state laws prohibit ownership of a fish, it is best to follow those laws. The consequences for violations can be extreme--including having the fish confiscated and killed.

yep white clouds are definately illegal in mass and can absolutely survive the winters. regardless of them being illegal in mass you can still get them here, i see them on our whosale lists all the time. its the same thing with piranhas, they're illegal in mass but we can still get em. as far as getting caught, not likely, the state has bigger fish to fry...hehe...

Huh....this is iteresting, as I've never known white clouds to be illeagal anywhere. They are definately legal in Toronto as they have them selling in all the lfs's, plus I have a few of my own in my tank.
