Who grows plants in pool filter sand?

Another thing with PFS is depth, less than ~1.5 inches & it's hard to keep roots down. But more than 3 & it's harder to vac. Yes, I vac PFS, 20 grit with python, 0 grade (fine) I use a small diameter vac.

Yes fishorama - a sand depth of no more than 2.5" at the rear should be sufficient for rooting plants but low enough to preclude the development of anaerobic gas pockets, and the sand at the deepest points should be stirred occasionally ( I use a chopstick usually) to ensure this doesn't occur.

Played with the 29g tonight. I planted dwarf sag, Crypt wendti, a small Aponogeton ulvaceu, Hygrophilia angustifolia in the sand, all but the dwarf sag is held down by rocks. Root tabs around each plant. I also put a java fern windelov that is tied to a shell and a small log of reg java fern (both babies from bigger plants in the 75g) in there. Below is a pic. I do have one question. As I was shoving the root tabs in the substrate, I thought, how many, how close to roots...lol...not sure what I'm doing here, help with placement please?

You don't need to be precise with placement of the tabs. Within a few inches of planted areas is fine. Wherever the plants are concentrated - your eye will tell you what the optimum placement positions are. One tab should adequately cover roughly a, 4" X 4", or 5" X 5" square area.
a 30 gal tank, would suggest no more than 6 -7 tabs or so. That help ?
 
Helps very much, ty. I put a whole tab by the hygro and apon, 1/2 a tab by the dwarf sag's and crypts. Think I'm ok...thanks again!
