Purigen
I have used Purigen for many months, in both my filters in a planted discus tank, and would highly recommend it. It does contain some carbon but a number of other 'purifying' elements as well, and the ability to re-charge it many times is a plus, making it very easy on the wallet.
It's certainly not essential by any means to maintaining a healthy, vibrant tank with good water conditions, but it helps a great deal, especially removing discolorations, odors, and other undesirable agents, and it consistently produces crystal clear water. Some say it's 'magic'.
I swear by it - much more effective than AC, imo.
Give it a try.
