My son's betta had a 10 gal to himself with 6 danios, but I recently moved 4 serpae tetras from another one of my tanks and a new dwarf puffer in with him. Somebody in the tank ate about half of his tail fin  !

Was it the tetras? Or the dwarf puffer? I only saw the betta chasing the tetras, never anyone chasing the betta!

How long will it take his fins to grow back?

I now have the tank divided with the betta seperated at one end. The danios are scheduled to be moved to safer waters tomorrow.

Are all tetras murderous scum? Is the dwarf puffer a ravenous maniac in a sweet little disguise? Will peace ever return to this tank???

it was the puffer get him out of there

i say it was the puffer too. they dont really chase the other fish but while theyre sleeping? they tend to nip on the fins.
well tahts what I heard. Ive never had a puffer so... ha

yeah these suckers (Dwarf puffers 1/4") will attact 6" bala sharks. i've seen it.

No line up needed...it was the puffer.

I don't know anything about the behaviour of puffers but I wouldn't necessarily let the serpaes off the hook. I got 6 serpaes a week ago and the day after I got them my little cories were missing bits of their dorsal fins. I suspect the smallest serpae but I haven't got enough evidence to move him out just yet -and I am hoping they'll settle down.

I had to move my bettas out of both of my big tanks, serpaes chewed up the fins of one, and I believe boesemanis chewed up the fins of the other. Not positive, but I think your serpaes could have done it as well.
Take care,
Mary.

I love that avatar. no matter how many times i see it it always makes me smile :)

I think I would agree with the puffer people, but I have heard serpaes can be a bit nippy so don't rule them out completely. one thing you could do in the meantime would be to find something relatively large your betta could go into to heal stress free :) they will handle room temperature water won't they? (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
