Why can I not keep bettas alive?

betta loves the pleco, and the water gets small changes during that time though, only 100%'s are 3 weeks.

we got ours from wall-eye mart. It's still goin, we have it in a 2.5 G vase in the kitchen, with a banna root plant and a tiny pleco, it seems to do fine with a 100% water change out every 3 weeks

O_O!!!! egads!

i have my betta in a 1.5 gallon bowl by himself and i do 100% water change once a week.

why on EARTH would you put a pleco in a vase with a betta??? its been well established time and again that plecos grow huge and fast and poop a LOT.

I agree that you might do better purchasing a betta from a fish store that keeps them in an aquarium rather than in those little tupperware things. I've had a Wal-mart one and a "fancy crown-tail" one and though both were fun to own, the fancy one looked much happier and healthier. He was in a 15 gallon tall with white clouds and otos and just ruled the tank. He'd swim against the filter current and even compete with the minnows for food. He just looked like a "real " fish. The poor ones at Wal-mart seem very tired, to say the least.

I'd say be sure to acclimate him to the water carefully and go ahead and spend a few more dollars and get a healthy fish - you'll enjoy him much more in the long run.

Keep us posted on your progress!

because alge tends to grow as the betta is near a window, I am aware of how big plecos get... I have several, It's tiny anyways around 1.5 in anyways once it hits 3 in it's to the big tank for it, Plus the betta seems to like the pleco around, when the lights go out they stay in the same spot near each other.

MightyQueenPixie, I have 3 Bettas that are in small containers..1g,1.5g and a 2g. They do not have filters, but they did eventually cycle. I don't get any readings for ammonia or nitrite at all. BUT... I do change about 80%-90% of their water evry 3 days and they are buy themselves. All but the one in the 2g, he has an ADF with him and live plants. :)

I do test the water, If it's bad then it gets a change out, the fish is completely happy.

As long as you can keep the temp stable and do regular water changes (every 2 days per gal roughly) there is nothing wrong with jarring your Betta. Every 3 weeks with a pleco is ridiculous.

That is SUCH a crock of bs. How about I sit you in a jar with your own excrement and that of an elephant for 3 weeks and then tell everyone that YOU are happy?

I'm pretty po'd that that betta is sitting in a vase for 3 weeks with a pleco and no water changes. That is downright disgusting and irresponsible. And don't tell me you check the water and change it when it's bad. That water would be bad in TWO DAYS, especially with a pleco. Please get the pleco OUT OF THE VASE. It does NOT belong there. Show some maturity and responsibility for that fish.

'Nuff said and if I get in trouble, okay, but I think it needed to be said.

had my mom remove the pleco and traded in the betta.
