Why cant we be friends?

I think this is an important thing to remember, and it does seem there's been a bit too much sniping/flaming going on. (Which isn't to say I'm a good judge, as I just recently got here so I've nothing to compare it against.) I do think there's something about the fact that the members here are part of a kind of affinity group where certain members have a LOT of knowledge about a topic that they care VERY strongly about and will passionately argue for the health and welfare of their pets. Sometimes this crosses into a failure to appreciate and acknowledge differing points of view. (It happens a LOT with dog breeders, :dog: particularly among those dedicated to particular breeds.) I think we all just need to be reminded of that once in a while, and not take what people say on here too literally. If you see something that isn't right, ask yourself if it's truly incorrect, if you simply have a difference of opinion, or if the original poster merely phrased her statement in an inartful manner.

And, most importantly, remember to be patient with those who are simply seeking help. Castigating them will only discourage them from seeking your help in the future and, if you truly care about these pets, then you WANT those people to ask questions and to not turn away in frustration.

Peace.

I agree. Calm down and let things go. I know of another fish site ( I will not post it name here) but a couple of people that have been there forever are getting hostile. One in particular I know of. They are down right rude. If we all try to think things through and relax. We can all get along. I can take a lot of insults before I say anything. So let's just play nice. :D :D :D

I should have made clear that my post is not directed at anyone in particular. And I will point out that I did include myself in the original post.

No, graphicdesign r ....I am crushing your head!!

No, no, I know. And we've talked before. I'm off base sometimes, that's what I was referring to.

I've got to be a little inclined to disagree. Sometimes taking the torch to someone's post is warranted, I can think of several examples, but I'll just condense it down to what I've said from scratch on forums:

1. If someone is being intentionally obtuse
2. If someone is knowingly being cruel to their pets
3. If someone is personally attacking someone without reason

Flaming people isn't all bad. It's the only way to chastise people when they do it wrong and then won't take responsibility. I do know this is a stone thrown from a glass house.

Having told off a couple of people -- not to the degree GD did, but I wish I had -- I'm agreeing with you to a point. IMHO some people need to be told off.

That said, I really don't understand the point to this:

I have seen the phrase "you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar."

It's an asburd saying. Anyone knows that you can catch more flies with a fresh corpse than honey any day.

LOL Roan! I love it :)
Things have been getting increasingly uglier around here...TOO much aggression! I think it may have something to do with some of the immature attitudes around here (both young and old members) and the NEED to be right...It is just a fish board folks...Differnet people do things differently and no two experiences are alike...Personally, all I try to do is share my experiences and make this hobby as enjoyable as possible...Somebody starts getting their panties in a knot and I just usually bow out...I dont argue, I dont care...It is JUST A FISH BOARD...Replies are not mandatory, so if someone is being an idiot, avoid them or block the all together...Certain folks (and they know who they are) are simply invisible to me...I never respond to their posts and treat them like they dont exist, because to me-they dont.

I've seen this same kind of issue on other forums with other subject matters. I think some of it is simply part of the social dynamic of online forums. There will always be those who want to cause trouble, since there is relatively small consequence to them. There will be those who think they know everything and are the definitive experts on whatever. There will be those who just like interacting with others with similar interests to them.

I'm still a newbie here and I've seen some arguments and fights break out that remind me of some of the other forums I post on. Overall, I think this forum is cool and hopefully I'll be able to contribute to it like others do. :)

EDIT: By the way, if you guys and gals offer to stock the 55g aquarium I hope to have setup sometime in early 2006, you would definitely be my friends. :D

Peace...
