Erm... Do you mean Asian people? Oriental is adjective for food and rugs.

Oriental is a term for anything that comes out of the Orient. The term came from early explorers who would orient their maps east in order to get there- and so the name stuck since thats where they were ALL going. Asian and Oriental mean the same thing, although many people from that corner of the world find the term "Oriental" to be somewhat derogatory, much like some other words that I wont mention that have fallen out of favor with certain minority communities.

As for the house thing, wow. thats all I can say. Wow. :duh:


PS-"oriental" rugs arent from the Far East, but from the Near East, and oriental food tends to come from the Far East. Interesting and useless facts of the day.

Uh... that was my point. 'Oriental' is considered offensive and derogatory in reference to people of Eastern Asian descent. Just something to remember....

Isnt it interesting how words go from being the norm to being considered derogatory? Who makes these decisions?

I don't know, but it makes for the 'gaps' between generations, for sure. It's not just names for ethnic groups that change. Words that were commonly used back in the early 1900s are nearly taboo now or mean entirely different things.

In some cases, I wonder who came up with some of the words, slang, or catch-phrases. I know that Hollywood is responsible for some of that.

So is that why all the building numbers here in Korea don't make any sense? You'll jump from 5 to 11 and back down to 6 as you walk down the street. Seriously, street numbers are useless here...only the cabs seem to understand them, and even then they get you lost half the time.

In Asia they number the homes in the order in which they are built.
