Could you possibly return the hood? Seriously a waste of money if you want to have a well-lit tank.
All in all if you consider the idea of buying a glass canopy top and a PC strip light, you only pay a little more than the $45 you already paid -

So there....$43 (actually less!) and you have 2.8 watts per gallon of PC lighting (better intensity than n/o fluorescent). Smart, eh? Then you can have pretty much any low to medium-high plant you want.
